Press Release: Montgomery’s David Azbell Celebrates Four Decades of Political Memorabilia Collection
Montgomery, AL — David Azbell’s passion for political memorabilia began when he was just 16, discovering a box of political buttons in his father’s storage. For 40 years, he has amassed an impressive collection that now occupies several rooms in his downtown Montgomery office, showcasing the "wild, weird and wonderful world of Alabama politics."
Azbell’s collection features everything from political buttons and posters to unique campaign items, telling stories that reflect historical trends and issues. "Each piece is like a Wikipedia entry,” he notes, emphasizing how memorabilia encapsulates significant periods in Alabama’s political landscape.
A political adviser and speechwriter for numerous Alabama politicians, Azbell has transformed his collection into a museum-like space, rich with history. Items range from personal artifacts belonging to prominent figures, including a desk used by former Alabama state Senator Hank Sanders, to quirky campaign items like large women’s underpants bearing George Wallace’s face.
Among the treasure trove of memorabilia are astonishing finds, such as a ticket to a fundraiser for Wallace on the day of his shooting, which Azbell considers his favorite item. He prides himself on preserving Alabama’s political history, believing that understanding the past is crucial for avoiding repetition of mistakes.
Attracting attention from locals and students alike, Azbell invites those interested to visit his collection, which he sees as a labor of love aimed at keeping Alabama’s political stories alive. “Many people under 50 are unaware of our history; I want to ensure it’s not forgotten,” he asserts.
