In the upcoming election, voters in 41 states will have the opportunity to decide on nearly 150 ballot measures that cover a wide range of policy issues. The most attention is on constitutional amendments related to abortion rights, with 10 states having measures on their ballots, including presidential and Senate battlegrounds. Other prominent issues include marijuana regulations, voting procedures, economic issues, and immigration laws.
Reproductive freedom, democracy, and economic justice are the major trends of this election year, according to the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center. In addition to the abortion-related measures, there are 39 measures related to voting and elections, seeking to create or further tighten voting restrictions or broaden access.
Nearly half the states have already legalized recreational or medical marijuana, and four more states will vote on joining them. Additional issues that voters will decide on include economic matters like minimum wage increases, property tax caps, and insurance coverage, as well as criminal justice issues related to raising penalties for drug-related crimes.
Only Arizona has an immigration-related measure on the ballot, which aims to increase the use of a federal database to check employment eligibility and give enforcement authority to state and local agencies. Critics argue that the measure would effectively resurrect controversial anti-illegal immigration legislation from 2010 and is designed to counter enthusiasm for the state’s abortion rights proposal.
Overall, the upcoming election is significant as voters will directly shape the future of various policy issues in their states through ballot measures.
