Prattville Pride Fest Moves to Evans Park Amid City Challenges
As pride organizations nationwide gear up for June’s celebrations, Prattville Pride faces unique hurdles ahead of its festival this Sunday, June 1. The event, now set to unfold at Evans Park and Pavilion near Maxwell Air Force Base, comes after difficulties securing the Cooter’s Pond Park venue within city limits.
Organizers Caryl Lawson and Adam Hunt expressed disappointment at the city’s inability to approve their request to host the event at Cooter’s Pond for the second consecutive year. Despite engaging with city officials throughout the past year to establish a green space rental agreement, they received no response regarding their request for an outdoor area essential for managing potential protest activity.
Communication with the Parks and Recreation Director Kellie Carter proved unfruitful; the organizers reached out multiple times with no clear resolution, leading them to book Evans Park instead. “If we could do it in Prattville, I would love to do it in Prattville,” Hunt stressed.
Coinciding with these setbacks, the organizers uncovered a coordinated effort to reserve Cooter’s Pond on every June weekend, a move that was confirmed when pavilions were booked for the month.
Despite the venue change, the fest will showcase more than 40 vendors, food trucks, outreach programs, drag performances, and the crowning of the 2025 Miss Fountain City Pride. The event aims to foster community spirit following past challenges, including harassment faced during previous gatherings by hate groups.
Last year’s inaugural event, attended by approximately 2,000 people, drew similar protests, highlighting ongoing tensions within the community. Nevertheless, organizers remain committed to celebrating their identity, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity.
