The suspect in the ambush killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, Luigi Mangione, was not insured by the company, according to UnitedHealth Group. Mangione is accused of fatally shooting CEO Brian Thompson on a New York City street as Thompson was on his way to an investor conference. The motive for the killing is under investigation, with New York Police Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny suggesting that Mangione may have targeted UnitedHealthcare due to its size as the fifth-largest corporation in America. Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania with a gun, silencer, and handwritten documents referencing the health care industry. He is also alleged to have written about targeting a CEO in a notebook. The gun used in the killing was a ghost gun made with a 3-D printed receiver. Mangione is facing charges in Pennsylvania and is fighting extradition to New York, where he will be charged with murder in Thompson’s killing. His attorney intends to plead not guilty to all charges. Thompson’s killing was targeted, and police believe Mangione arrived in New York on November 24 and stayed at a hostel. The next hearing in Mangione’s case is scheduled for December 30.
