Community Unites in Support After Man’s Hatchet Attack in Tucson
TUCSON, Ariz. – An Alabama man remains in critical condition after a brutal hatchet attack in downtown Tucson on April 5. Jacob Couch was struck in the neck while he and his wife, Kristin, were returning home from a short stay in California.
Kristin Couch has been by her husband’s side at Banner University Medical Center, expressing gratitude for the tremendous support they’ve received from the Tucson community. “I know he’d be so grateful if he knew how everyone was coming together to help us,” she said, reflecting on the unexpected kindness from strangers. During the attack, however, she noted that no bystanders intervened to assist Jacob, leaving her vulnerable amidst the chaos.
The couple’s belongings were seized as evidence, adding to their distress as they found themselves far from home with limited resources. Local resident Jennie Gage initiated a social media campaign that resonated deeply, mobilizing community members to assist Kristin. “It was like an explosion of Tucson people wanting to wrap her up and take care of her,” Gage remarked.
The response was overwhelming, resulting in donations of clothing, food, and financial support to help Kristin during this challenging time. She is currently staying with a local woman, Aimee Dobbins, who offered her home.
Daniel Michael, the suspect arrested for the attack, is being held on a $1 million bond, facing two counts of aggravated assault. Investigators have stated that the incident was captured on video, and Michael allegedly confessed when confronted with evidence.
As Jacob shows signs of brain activity, Kristin remains hopeful for his recovery. The support surrounding them has underscored the spirit of togetherness within Tucson, a sentiment Gage hopes will redefine the narrative of this tragic event. News 4 Tucson will continue to follow this developing story.
