Committee Makes Changes and Approves Bill to Revamp Alabama Pharmacy Board Following Energetic Public Hearing

A bill aimed at reforming the Alabama Board of Pharmacy has moved forward after passing out of a Senate committee with an amendment. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Kerry Underwood, aims to address issues found in a recent audit, including issuing higher fees than allowed by law and violating open meeting laws. The bill would increase the board’s membership, mandate diversity in its makeup, and change the nomination process for board members.

During a public hearing, there was support and opposition to the bill, with concerns raised about the influence of the Alabama Pharmacy Association (APA) on the board. An amendment introduced by Sen. Keith Kelley aimed to introduce more balance by changing the nomination process and reducing the number of seats the APA provides names for.

Despite opposition from board member Johnny Brooklere, who requested more time for the board to address issues internally, the bill passed in the House and is now moving to the Senate floor for further debate. Supporters of the bill believe it is necessary to address the issues identified in the audit and ensure the board operates more effectively in the future.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Kerry Underwood, has been commended for his work on the bill, with Sen. Chris Elliott recognizing the efforts to address the issues at hand. The bill’s next steps will be closely watched as it moves through the legislative process.
