Coach Bill ‘Brother’ Oliver, a member of the Alabama and Auburn football families, passes away at 85

Long-time football coach Bill ‘Brother’ Oliver passed away on April 14 at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy in the football community. Oliver had a successful career as both a player and an assistant coach, making significant contributions to teams such as the University of Alabama, Auburn University, and the University of Chattanooga. He played a key role in Coach Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant’s first National Championship team at Alabama in 1961 and later helped lead Alabama to a National Championship as the defensive coordinator in 1993. Oliver also served as a coach at Auburn, Chattanooga, and Clemson, among other institutions.

After retiring from coaching with a head coaching record of 31-17-1, Oliver continued to work as a defensive consultant at various schools, including Jacksonville State University. He was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2013 for his contributions to the sport. Former players and colleagues remember Oliver as a defensive coach with an offensive mind, whose teachings had a profound impact on their performance on the field.

Jim’ Zig’ Zeigler, a writer who covers Alabama’s people, places, events, groups, and prominent deaths, highlighted Oliver’s career and impact on the football community in a recent article. Zeigler described Oliver as a family man with strong ties to his personal family and the football families he was a part of throughout his career. Oliver’s dedication to the game and his influence on players and colleagues will be remembered by those who had the privilege of working with him.
