Climate Change Increases Arson Risk in California

California experiences 10% to 15% of wildfires ignited by arson annually, and the trend continues in 2024 due to increasing temperatures and longer fire seasons from climate change. Arsonists usually target areas with dry timber, leading to increased damages to structures and risks to lives. The state has seen more than 477,000 acres burned by alleged arson in 2024, the highest since 2014. This year, 91 people were arrested for arson by the end of August, following normal trends. Researchers have found that wildfire arsonists are typically young men who set multiple fires due to a psychological need for fire. These crimes are difficult to prosecute due to lack of physical evidence, especially in rural areas where fires can easily become uncontrolled. Although advances in technology have helped investigators, victims rarely receive full compensation for their losses. Arson arrests can lead to a decrease in wildfire starts in specific regions, indicating a serial effect among arsonists. However, as temperatures rise, fire seasons lengthen, and droughts worsen, the risk of wildfire arson continues to pose a significant threat in California. One recent suspect, Stout, has been charged with arson of an inhabited structure and could face 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
