Clean Energy Technology: A New Catalyst for Growth – Opinion

China Leads Global Renewable Energy Surge: A Historic Year for Clean Technology

According to a report from the International Renewable Energy Agency, global renewable energy capacity surged by a record 585 gigawatts (15.1 percent) in the past year, with China playing a crucial role by contributing nearly 63.8 percent of this growth. The year 2024 marked a significant milestone for China’s economy, as green technologies accounted for an impressive 10.3 percent of its economic growth, leading to an investment of 13.6 trillion yuan (about $1.89 trillion) in the sector.

For the first time, clean energy technology has contributed 26 percent to China’s GDP growth, surpassing real estate sales. The sector encompasses renewable energy, nuclear power, electric vehicles (EVs), and energy storage, which are vital for reducing China’s carbon footprint. China dominates the global markets for solar panels, battery packs, and EVs, with provinces like Anhui, Guangdong, and Jiangsu focusing on specific areas such as EV manufacturing and renewable energy development.

Inner Mongolia has emerged as a key player, boasting substantial wind and solar power resources that account for significant percentages of China’s total capacity. The region broke records by adding over 41 gigawatts of renewable energy in 2024, bringing its total installed capacity to more than 135 gigawatts, surpassing that of thermal power.

As China gears up for its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30), the nation’s clean energy ambition could reshape not just its economy but also the global power landscape. While Europe and the U.S. grapple with energy transition challenges, China’s state-supported model may offer insights for developing countries seeking sustainable industrialization. The world is closely watching China’s clean energy journey, marking a pivotal point in the global green transition narrative.
