City lights up for three-day festival of light

The Light Up Leicester festival has brought a dazzling display of art installations and light shows to the city centre, with the aim of drawing tens of thousands of visitors before the event ends on Friday. The festival, which is being held for the first time since 2022, kicked off with a procession of schoolchildren and includes various activities such as an illuminated bike parade, a dance performance, and a parade of 4m tall illuminated horses.

Art installations are set up at eight locations across the city centre, including a digital lightshow at the cathedral depicting the city’s history. The festival features a range of installations such as giant bubble-inspired structures, kinetic sculptures, geometric hoops of light and sound, LED light towers, and glowing inflatable wildlife.

Simon Jenner of the Leicester Business Improvement District (BID) scheme highlighted the collaborative effort of partners in creating something special for the city. The festival aims to showcase the creativity and diversity of Leicester through light and art, providing an immersive experience for visitors.

Residents and visitors can follow BBC Leicester for updates on the festival, and are encouraged to share their story ideas or feedback. The festival promises to be a visual delight and a unique experience for all who visit Leicester city centre during the event.
