China strengthens collaboration with U.S. to combat smuggling

China’s National Immigration Administration has reported an increase in smuggling and cross-border criminal activities, with individuals being deceived into participating in these illegal activities, resulting in serious threats to personal safety and economic losses. The administration, along with law enforcement agencies from countries like the United States, is cracking down on smuggling and other violations through mutual respect and consultation. The United States has deported Chinese individuals who attempted to enter the country illegally back to China with charter flights this year. The difficulty in obtaining U.S. visas and economic impacts of China’s Covid-19 lockdowns have led to a rise in Chinese nationals presenting at the U.S.-Mexico border. Nearly 56,000 Chinese migrants have been encountered at the Southwest border with Mexico and the northern border with Canada, crossing illegally both between and at ports of entry, in the 2024 fiscal year through May, surpassing the numbers seen in the entire previous fiscal year.
