Central Europe hit by deadly floods in Romania with death toll rising to four

Flooding caused by days of torrential rain has resulted in at least four deaths and widespread damage to homes in eastern Romania. The Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, southern Germany, and parts of Austria are also facing severe flooding, with thousands of homes without power and residents being evacuated as river levels continue to rise. In the Czech Republic, northern and northeastern areas have been particularly affected, with more heavy rainfall expected in the coming days.

In Romania, eight counties have been impacted by the flooding, with Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu visiting the hard-hit Galati county where four people were found dead, thousands of homes were damaged, and tens of thousands were without power. The priority is currently on saving lives and providing necessary logistical support for rescue efforts.

In Prague, preventative anti-flood measures have been put in place after catastrophic floods in 2002, with the city heavily investing in flood barriers and evacuation plans. Prague Zoo has been closed, and Czech Railways services have been disrupted. In neighboring countries such as Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Austria, emergency services are preparing for potential evacuations as river levels continue to rise.

Officials across the region are urging residents to stay safe and be prepared for further flooding, with weather forecasts indicating more heavy rainfall. Critical nights lie ahead as emergency services work to respond to the ongoing flood crisis and ensure the safety of affected populations.
