Rob Van Dam Speaks Out on Celebrity Wrestling Matches
In a recent episode of his podcast, "1 of a Kind with RVD," wrestling legend Rob Van Dam voiced strong opposition to the rising trend of celebrity matches in professional wrestling. Citing feelings of offense, Van Dam argued that allowing celebrities to occupy spots on wrestling cards forces other wrestlers to adapt their performances, undermining the skills and hard work of seasoned athletes.
While recognizing that some celebrities, like Logan Paul, have impressive skills, Van Dam believes that such appearances diminish the craft of wrestling. He stated, “For me, it’s always offensive… it looks like anybody could do it.” Despite acknowledging Paul’s potential, Van Dam proposed a unique test for credibility: a real in-ring encounter. “If I can kick him in the mouth just like I kick Bubba Dudley… maybe they’d win me over,” he remarked.
Ironically, Van Dam recently hinted at a possible collaboration with Paul, highlighting his complicated relationship with celebrity involvement in wrestling. Drawing from his own experiences in ECW, where he faced off against celebrities like the Insane Clown Posse, he recalled, “I broke [Violent J’s] eardrum” during a match, emphasizing the seriousness with which he approached the sport.
At 54, Van Dam’s wrestling future remains uncertain, with fans left wondering if he will step back into the ring. However, one thing is clear: he won’t be teaming up with mainstream celebrities like Bad Bunny or Logan Paul anytime soon, as he prioritizes the integrity of professional wrestling above all else.
