The Peter Tatchell Foundation is calling for celebrities scheduled to perform in Hungary to boycott the country due to the recent passage of a ban on Pride marches and parades. The ban, implemented by Hungary’s conservative Fidesz party led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, targets Pride-themed celebrations under the guise of “protecting children” from exposure to homosexuality. Those attending Budapest Pride can face fines and police surveillance using facial recognition software.
Organizers of Budapest Pride have condemned the law, stating that the true intent is to suppress free speech and assembly. Hungarians have taken to the streets in protest against Orbán’s attempts to set himself up as a dictator. The Peter Tatchell Foundation is urging celebrities like Chappell Roan, Emeli Sandé, and Alanis Morissette, who have upcoming concerts in Hungary, to use their platform to advocate for LGBTQ rights.
The foundation is also targeting celebrities like Katy Perry, Charli XCX, and Nelly Furtado, as well as Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, who are reportedly set to shoot a film in Hungary. The new law is part of a series of actions by the Hungarian government to restrict LGBTQ rights, including banning LGBTQ topics from television and sex education. Celebrities are being called upon to speak out against these oppressive laws and support the LGBT+ community in Hungary.
