Catholic Diocese Investigates Pastor for Allegations of Abuse
In a tumultuous turn of events, the Diocese of Birmingham is investigating Robert J. Sullivan, the current pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Homewood, following serious allegations involving sexual misconduct. Sullivan, who has served the parish for two years, is accused of paying a former exotic dancer nearly $400,000 for a sexual relationship that allegedly began when she was just 17 years old in 2009.
Former pastor Martin Muller, who led the church for over 35 years before retiring in June 2023, expressed his reluctance to discuss the situation, underscoring the ongoing investigation as a reason for his silence. At 93 years old, Muller is focused on enjoying his retirement peacefully.
Bishop Steven Raica confirmed the investigation, initiated after a victim assistance coordinator received the allegations in July. Although the Alabama Department of Human Resources determined that an investigation wasn’t warranted based on the claims alone, the Diocese has proceeded under its church laws and policies, which dictate that such allegations against clergy must be formally reported to the Vatican.
The allegations surfaced publicly through Heather Jones, who claims Sullivan paid her for companionship that escalated into sexual relations and financial support, casting a shadow over the church’s leadership.
Sullivan, aged 61, announced he was taking a leave of absence beginning August 4, and has been removed from public ministry until further notice. The case has drawn public attention, with the woman hoping to safeguard others against possible exploitation.
As the investigation unfolds, the Diocese emphasizes the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise, while urging prayers for all involved.
