Hurricane Oscar made landfall on the northern coast of east Cuba with maximum sustained winds near 80 mph. The Category 1 storm, described as “compact but powerful,” formed off the Bahamas and prompted hurricane warnings for parts of Cuba. Oscar is expected to weaken after landfall but could still be a tropical storm when it moves north of Cuba and across the central Bahamas. Cuba is bracing for impact with storm warnings and watches in place for various provinces. Eastern Cuba is expected to experience hurricane conditions and heavy rainfall, with up to 15 inches of rain possible in some areas. The southeastern Bahamas and Turks and Caicos are also expected to receive significant rainfall. Additionally, storm surge of 1 to 3 feet along Cuba’s north shore is anticipated, along with “large and destructive waves” near the coast. Oscar is forecasted to move across eastern Cuba on Sunday night into Monday before accelerating northeastward across the central Bahamas on Tuesday.
