An elderly female cat, now named Mirage, was found alive after a nearly 400-foot fall at Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, which tragically killed her owners, Matthew Nannen, 45, and Bailee Crane, 58. Their bodies were discovered on April 29, approximately 380 feet below a lookout point, after they apparently fell from Inspiration Point. Authorities believe the couple may have climbed over a railing before the incident occurred, but the exact cause of their fall remains unclear. They were living out of a U-Haul and had recently traveled from Arizona, with Florida noted as their last known address.
Mirage was located in a soft-sided carrier, covered in mud and dirt upon her rescue. She suffered from fractures in her ribs and appeared sore and matted. Fortunately, she has begun to recover under the care of the veterinary team at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, where she is currently being treated. According to the sanctuary, she is eating and drinking on her own and is responding well to the care provided. Judah Battista, the chief sanctuary officer, noted the remarkable nature of the cat’s survival and described her as a “very sweet girl” who is doing well. The announcement has drawn attention to both the tragic loss of her owners and the resilience of the feline, highlighting the animal’s journey toward recovery following such a harrowing experience.
