On Thursday, Indigenous leaders from Ecuador’s Amazon highlighted the environmental threats posed by oil expansion during a kayak event near Chevron’s Richmond refinery in California. Their visit coincided with the introduction of a state Senate resolution urging California to assess its role in importing Amazon crude oil, particularly as Ecuador plans to auction 14 new oil blocks, encroaching on Indigenous territories.
Ecuadorians previously voted to preserve Yasuni National Park, a crucial rainforest area, reinforcing their opposition to drilling. Despite this, the Ecuadorian government is pushing ahead with oil development, even as Brazil simultaneously auctions new oil sites. Juan Bay, president of the Waorani people, stressed the importance of raising awareness about the impacts of California’s crude oil consumption on Indigenous rights and environmental integrity.
The visit to California served as a platform for Indigenous leaders to share their experiences, emphasizing the profound connection between local struggles and Amazon preservation. They raised alarms about California’s considerable use of Amazon oil, hindering climate action and contributing to public health risks and environmental degradation.
State Senator Josh Becker lauded the Indigenous leaders for their environmental advocacy and their role in resisting oil extraction. He emphasized the necessity of recognizing the consequences of California’s crude oil dependency, particularly concerning Indigenous rights violations.
Kevin Koenig from Amazon Watch cautioned that California’s reliance on Amazon crude undermines its own sustainability goals, linking deforestation in the Amazon to increasing droughts and wildfires in the state. The proposed resolution marks a pivotal step for California, encouraging examination of its energy consumption’s impacts on conservation and cultural preservation in Ecuador, set for a vote soon.
