Britt: Federal Funding to Support Alabama’s Summer Learning Programs

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Federal Educational Funding Released for Alabama

U.S. Senator Katie Britt announced the release of $21.2 million in federal educational funding for Alabama following a recent push by a coalition of Republican senators. This funding, designated for after-school and summer learning programs, was previously frozen due to federal review processes. In a statement on X, formerly Twitter, Britt expressed her satisfaction with the allocation, recognizing the critical support it offers to local communities.

The U.S. Department of Education communicated the release on Friday, revealing that a total of $1.3 billion in frozen funds would be made available nationally, with Alabama receiving its share due to persistent advocacy from senators like Britt and Tommy Tuberville. Despite this release, Alabama still has approximately $52 million in educational funds pending, including allocations for migrant student support and professional development for teachers.

The funds, part of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) program, are aimed at enhancing after-school and summer enrichment opportunities, specifically in high-poverty areas. This initiative has benefited over 10,400 students in Alabama during the 2023-24 school year, with programs including academic support, arts, and STEM activities.

Organizations like the Boys and Girls Clubs have also been pivotal in utilizing these funds to provide essential services to underserved communities. CEO Jim Clark warned of potential closures for hundreds of clubs if funding does not continue, impacting over 220,000 children.

As summer programs are underway, Alabama officials continue to advocate for the remaining frozen funds. State Superintendent Eric Mackey noted that many schools had begun utilizing their anticipated funding.

The federal funds were appropriated in March and were expected to support educational programs starting July 1. With ongoing discussions regarding the remaining funds, there is hope for their eventual release.
