Britt Challenges Commerce Secretary on Alabama’s Biotech and Manufacturing Issues

Federal Lawmakers Advocate for Alabama’s Key Industries During Commerce Secretary’s Testimony

Washington, D.C. – During U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s recent testimony before congressional committees, Alabama lawmakers emphasized the importance of the state’s biotech, automotive, and agriculture sectors.

Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, opened discussions by addressing the Birmingham Biotechnology Hub’s recent loss of a $44 million federal grant earmarked for health care innovation. The grant, originally awarded in January, was rescinded last month, requiring the hub to recompete for funding through the Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration Tech Hubs program. “Birmingham’s experts are leaders in various fields,” Britt highlighted, urging Lutnick to ensure a fair process moving forward. He agreed to consult with lawmakers from both parties regarding the program.

Britt also underscored Alabama’s automotive industry, the nation’s top auto exporter, by questioning Lutnick about introducing an export credit for automakers. Lutnick responded that financial support would depend on market access agreements.

On the House side, Representative Dale Strong (R-Huntsville), a new member of the Appropriations Committee, reinforced Alabama’s manufacturing significance, particularly with the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing facility in his district. He sought Lutnick’s insights on reshoring key industries, such as pharmaceuticals and semiconductors. Lutnick affirmed the necessity of bringing manufacturing back to the U.S.

Britt addressed the manufacturing capabilities in Mobile, home to Airbus, pressing Lutnick to consider the industry’s production needs amidst a significant backlog of 14,000 aircraft orders. Responding to Strong’s inquiry about supporting American farmers, Lutnick emphasized his focus on establishing trade deals to expand markets for agricultural products.

Lutnick’s appearance was part of discussions on the president’s fiscal year 2026 budget request, showcasing Alabama’s strategic role in national economic advancement.
