Black men and Minneapolis police officers discover shared history in Alabama

The Minneapolis Police Department has been under scrutiny for a pattern of racism in policing that violated the Minnesota Human Rights Act. They are operating under a court-ordered agreement with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights and recently reached a federal consent decree with the U.S. Justice Department, pending approval by a federal judge.

In light of these challenges, MPR News is highlighting efforts to build trust between police and community members in Minneapolis. Angela Davis presents an audio documentary about the Police and Black Men Project, a group working to bridge the divide between law enforcement and the Black community. The project started eight years ago after the police killing of Philando Castile, with the goal of repairing relationships and fostering understanding.

The group recently traveled to Montgomery, Ala., to tour museums and historical sites related to slavery, segregation, and mass incarceration in America. They engaged in intimate discussions to connect the past to the current state of distrust between police and communities. Angela Davis and producer Stephen Smith documented their experiences and discussions.

Listeners can tune in to the audio documentary on Wednesday at 9 a.m. to hear about the trip and its impact. Part two of the report will air on Thursday, featuring phone calls from the audience. The podcast version of MPR News with Angela Davis is available on various platforms for those who miss the original broadcasts. By shedding light on these efforts, MPR News aims to contribute to building shared understanding and fostering positive relationships between police and communities in Minneapolis.
