Birmingham Police Chief to Retire Following 3rd Mass Shooting in City This Year

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond announced his retirement after a mass shooting reignited concerns over rising gun violence and homicides in the city. Thurmond, who has been with the police department for over half his life, will step down at the end of November. Mayor Randall Woodfin praised Thurmond for his commitment to the city and its residents.

The city of Birmingham saw 122 homicides between January and September, with the vast majority involving guns. State Representative Juandalynn Givan criticized the police department for failing to effectively address the issue of gun violence. Thurmond stated that his decision to retire was made before the recent events and criticism.

Following the mass shooting, a 22-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder. The mayor highlighted a $16 million program aimed at recruiting over 170 new officers to address the department’s shortage. Deputy Chief Michael Pickett, with two decades of experience in the department, will serve as interim police chief after Thurmond’s departure.

Woodfin described the last few weeks as challenging and commended Thurmond for his efforts in making arrests related to the mass shooting. Thurmond did not disclose a specific reason for his retirement but mentioned his family as a priority. The city awaits the transition to new leadership and continues to focus on addressing the issue of gun violence in Birmingham.
