Fans of the Big Bear, California eaglets celebrated a significant milestone when Sunny, one of the young bald eagles, took her first flight from the family nest. Over the past few months, wildlife enthusiasts have closely followed the journey of the bald eagle pair, Jackie and Shadow, as they laid eggs, witnessed the hatching of three eaglets, and now saw one of their offspring venture out into the world.
In early March, three eaglets hatched; however, one unfortunately died mid-month, leaving Sunny and her sibling, Gizmo, to thrive. The Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) provided a continuous livestream, allowing fans to observe the eaglets’ development and interactions daily.
Sunny’s first flight occurred on a Monday morning at 10:46 am, marking a momentous occasion. The organization described the event on their website and Instagram, noting how Sunny spread her wings, caught the wind, and leaped into the air. After her flight, she circled back toward a familiar roost tree while Gizmo watched from nearby. Video footage captured Sunny’s leap, showing her perched on top of the roost tree afterward.
Though Sunny may return to the nest—an action witnessed with previous eaglets—her future movements are now her own decision. By the afternoon, Jackie and Shadow were seen in the nest with Gizmo, who was enjoying food they had caught. In the days leading up to her flight, Sunny had been increasingly adventurous, exploring the tree branches and even hovering briefly before taking the leap. This comes just after it was confirmed that both surviving eaglets are female. As of now, Sunny has yet to return to the nest.
