Press Article: U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell Challenges Treasury Secretary Over Tax Bill Impacts in Ways and Means Hearing
In a recent Ways and Means Committee hearing, U.S. Representative Terri Sewell, a Democrat from Birmingham, intensely questioned Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent regarding the potential effects of President Trump’s tax legislation — dubbed the "One Big Beautiful Act" — on Alabama residents.
Sewell expressed concerns about the bill’s projected extension of tax cuts and its significant reductions in Medicaid and food aid, aimed at saving billions. Citing the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), she highlighted that the legislation could increase the national debt by $2.4 trillion over the next decade.
In response, Bessent acknowledged the CBO’s projection of $2.8 trillion from tariff income over the same period but refrained from confirming the tax bill’s overall impact on national debt. Sewell emphasized her constituents’ anxiety over rising prices, noting that the administration’s promises of reduced costs have yet to materialize.
Questioning the bill’s benefits, she highlighted stark disparities, with high-income earners reportedly set to gain approximately $90,000 in tax cuts by 2027, while those earning less than $50,000 could see tax benefits of less than $300. Referring to the Medicaid cuts, she stated, "To pay for your bill by kicking people off health insurance… is immoral and not fair."
The hearing also touched upon the potential increase in the nation’s debt ceiling by $4 trillion, with Bessent predicting the country could reach this limit by mid-summer. Sewell rebuffed a dismissive comment about her constituents, affirming, “Just because you’re poor doesn’t mean you’re ignorant.”
As the Republican leadership aims to finalize the budget by the July 4 recess, Sewell’s questioning underscores the ongoing debate surrounding the implications of Trump’s tax cuts for everyday Americans.
