Bert Neff Sentenced in Connection with Alabama Baseball Betting Scandal

Former Alabama Coach’s Betting Scandal Results in Prison Sentence

Bert Neff, who attempted to place a $100,000 bet on the Alabama-LSU baseball game after receiving inside information from the Crimson Tide’s head coach, was sentenced to eight months in prison and three years of supervised release on Monday. Neff pled guilty to obstructing a federal grand jury investigation earlier this year, a charge that could have led to a decade-long sentence.

The incident began when Alabama’s former coach, Brad Bohannon, alerted Neff to the impending injury of his starting pitcher, prompting Neff to place a bet on LSU, which ultimately won the game 8-6. Following the revelations, Bohannon was swiftly dismissed from his position and is now barred from any NCAA athletic role for 15 years.

Neff’s attempt to make a substantial wager on the game raised red flags at BetMGM, leading to an investigation. Although he sought to bet six figures, restrictions limited his wager to $15,000. During the investigation, Neff engaged in deceptive practices, including destroying cell phone evidence and providing false statements to the FBI.

Neff, who had a son on the 2023 University of Cincinnati baseball team, faced further scrutiny when it was discovered that two Bearcat assistant coaches were aware of the details surrounding his bet but failed to report them to the authorities, resulting in their dismissal.

This case highlights serious concerns regarding integrity in college athletics and the potential consequences of inside information in sports betting, marking a significant moment in the ongoing debate over gambling regulations in the industry.
