Over 41% of Indians Have Embraced Yoga, Reveals Ayush Ministry Survey
In a significant reveal marking a decade since the UN declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga, a new survey by the Ayush Ministry indicates that over 41% of respondents have integrated yoga into their daily lives. The study, titled "Impact Assessment of a Decade of International Day of Yoga," surveyed 30,084 households across 34 states and Union Territories, capturing both urban and rural sentiments.
The findings showcased that 24.6% of participants credit yoga for improved fitness levels, while 16.9% reported reduced stress. Roughly one-quarter claimed to have gained valuable health knowledge through their practice. According to Dr. Raghavendra Rao, Director of the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), 11.2% engage in yoga regularly, with an additional 13.4% practicing occasionally. However, a substantial 75.5% do not practice yoga at all.
Dr. Rao emphasized that the term "adopted yoga" extends beyond formal classes, encompassing various forms like bhakti yoga (devotional prayer), meditation, and self-practice. The survey highlighted that regular practitioners include 12.6% from urban areas and 10.4% from rural backgrounds. Notably, 11.6% of male respondents practice regularly, compared to 10.7% of females.
Awareness about yoga is notably high among the 18-24 age group, but individuals aged 65 and above represent the highest percentage of regular practitioners at 17%. Additionally, 36.2% of respondents with health conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension, turn to yoga as a therapeutic practice.
The survey also revealed that 39.3% of respondents are aware of common yoga protocols, and one-third have attended at least one community event celebrating International Day of Yoga in the past decade.
