Atop the ruins of Syria, Assad hides in a modernist oasis in his lavish palace

After being forced into exile in Russia following a rebel overthrow, the opulent trappings of Syria’s former President Bashar Al-Assad and his wife Asma are now being revealed. NBC News gained access to one of Assad’s palaces, showcasing the lavish lifestyle he once enjoyed. The master bedroom featured elegant decor, but the mattress was found resting on a coffee table. The palace showed signs of having been robbed, with fighters from the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham standing guard. The dining room had a marble-lined table and crystal chandeliers. Nearby, another guest palace displayed signs of robbery, with some rooms torched but others left intact with art and expensive furniture.

Rooms in Assad’s palace were set up as a doctor’s surgery and a barber shop, showing signs that he planned to stay in power for a long time. An expansive library with books ranging from children’s stories to memoirs and political books like Michael Moore’s ‘Dude, Where’s My Country?’ were also found. The reality of the atrocities committed under Assad’s rule, including locking up, torturing, and killing citizens, is now being uncovered as his luxurious lifestyle is laid bare. The Assad regime caused terror and poverty for the people of Syria while they lived in opulence. This revelation paints a stark contrast to the suffering faced by Syrians under Assad’s brutal reign.
