Arkansas Takes Game 1 of Fayetteville Super Regional Against Tennessee
In an electrifying start to the Fayetteville Super Regional, the Arkansas Razorbacks triumphed over the Tennessee Volunteers 4-3, with pitchers Zach Root and Gabe Gaeckle holding Tennessee to just two hits.
Root delivered a remarkable performance, showcasing his intensity on the mound. He maintained a no-hitter through the first four innings, ultimately racking up six strikeouts. Despite conceding a two-run homer in the fifth, which gave Tennessee a brief lead, Root’s resilience shone through as he orchestrated a pivotal double play to end the sixth inning and thwart the Vols’ momentum.
Arkansas struck first in the second inning, capitalizing on a wild pitch to score a run. After Tennessee’s surge with two runs in the fifth, Arkansas responded decisively, with Ryder Helfrick smashing a two-run homer in the bottom of the same inning, reclaiming the advantage. Adding to their lead, Charles Davalan’s sixth-inning single brought in an insurance run, which proved crucial as the game unfolded.
Tennessee’s Andrew Fischer kept the drama alive with a solo home run in the ninth, narrowing the gap to just one run. However, Gaeckle, who secured his second save of the season, sharply ended the game with a strikeout.
With the victory in hand, Arkansas now leads their best-of-three series. Game 2 is slated for Sunday at 3 p.m. ET, featuring Tennessee’s star pitcher Liam Doyle, who must guide his team to victory to force a decisive Game 3. As last year’s College World Series champions, the Volunteers face a crucial battle in their quest to retain their title.
