Scientists in Australia have discovered the oldest known fossil footprints of a reptile-like animal, dating back approximately 350 million years. This finding indicates that the evolution of land-dwelling capabilities in animals occurred more rapidly than previously believed, as it was once thought that the transition from fin to limb took much longer. Until now, the earliest reptile footprints were from Canada and dated to 318 million years ago.
The ancient footprints were found on a slab of sandstone near Melbourne and feature reptile-like feet with long toes and hooked claws, suggesting the creature may have resembled a modern monitor lizard. Estimated to be about 2.5 feet (80 centimeters) long, the digits and claws are a critical identification feature, indicating that these animals were true walkers. Only land-adapted animals developed claws, as earlier vertebrates remained dependent on water, lacking the hard nails needed for terrestrial life.
The footprints mark an eventful day in the life of these creatures, with one animal scurrying across the ground before a light rain left dimples in its track, followed by two others moving in the opposite direction before the ground hardened.
