Analyzing the Accuracy of Statements made in the Presidential Debate between Harris and Trump

In their first debate, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump clashed on various issues such as foreign policy, abortion, and guns. Harris corrected Trump’s claim that her father is a Marxist, stating that he is not. Trump falsely claimed that the U.S. left $85 billion worth of military equipment in Afghanistan, when in reality it was a much smaller amount. Harris debunked Trump’s statement that she wants to confiscate guns, clarifying that she and Tim Walz are gun owners themselves. Trump made false statements about job losses and the Russia-Ukraine war, while Harris exaggerated Trump’s stance on fossil fuels and abortions.

Trump’s claims about the botched troop exit from Afghanistan were mostly true, but he neglected to mention his role in the withdrawal. Harris’ statement that no U.S. military members are in active duty in combat zones was false, as troops are serving in various conflict areas worldwide. Trump’s claims about inflation, Project 2025, and the number of migrants coming into the U.S. monthly were also false. Harris accurately stated that extending Trump’s tax cuts would lead to a $5 trillion deficit, and that his proposed sales tax would significantly impact middle-class families financially.
