American Travis Timmerman Rescued from Syrian Captivity After Months of Imprisonment

A video emerged claiming to show a missing American in Syria named Travis from Missouri, who said he was detained earlier this year after crossing into the country on foot. The man, not identified fully, said he was not a journalist but had been treated well in prison. Speculation arose that he could be journalist Austin Tice, missing since 2012, but Tice’s family does not believe it is him. The man, found in a town just outside Damascus, appeared calm and unbothered by the situation and reporters surrounding him. He said he had been in Europe before crossing into Syria on a pilgrimage. Authorities in Missouri and Budapest had earlier put out missing person reports for a man named Pete Timmerman, who Hungarian police had identified as Travis Pete Timmerman. Timmerman, 29, had disappeared in Budapest on May 28th. The man seen in the video may be Timmerman, and not Tice as initially speculated. The source of the video claimed to be Travis, and not Tice, and did not seem concerned about being in custody. Matt Bradley reported from Damascus, while Chantal Da Silva reported from London. Richard Engel and Andrea Mitchell also contributed to the coverage.
