American Airlines and Army helicopter crash over Potomac River likely to result in no survivors

At least 28 bodies have been recovered from the icy waters of the Potomac River after an American Airlines jet carrying 60 passengers and four crew members collided with an Army helicopter. Officials stated that the crash was the deadliest U.S. air disaster in nearly 24 years. The search and rescue operation was ongoing, but officials did not believe there were any survivors.

The American Airlines jet was found upside down in three sections in waist-deep water, while the wreckage of the Army helicopter was also recovered. Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser expressed grief over the tragedy.

The passengers on the flight included a group of figure skaters, their coaches, and family members returning from a skating camp following the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. The crash occurred as the regional jet collided with the military helicopter during its approach to Reagan National Airport.

The cause of the collision has not been determined yet, and all takeoffs and landings at the airport were halted as rescuers searched the area for survivors. President Donald Trump offered condolences to the families of the victims. The National Transportation Safety Board will be conducting an investigation into the crash.

Reagan National Airport was set to reopen at 11 a.m. on Thursday after being closed due to the crash. The proximity of the airport to Washington D.C.’s landmarks makes it a popular choice for travelers visiting the city. The tragedy has served as a major test for newly appointed agency leaders in the Trump administration.
