Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals scored his 894th career goal, tying the NHL record set by Wayne Gretzky. Ovechkin, a highly touted prospect drafted in 2004, has lived up to his potential as an offensive force, holding numerous scoring records in addition to tying Gretzky’s mark. He has won nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophies for most goals in a season, and has been a three-time NHL MVP. Ovechkin led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018 and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Despite early playoff exits since their Cup win, the Capitals are currently leading the Eastern Conference and are second overall in the NHL this season. Ovechkin, now 39, has been playing professionally since 2001 and has a contract with Washington through the 2025-26 season.
