Alabamians Attend Veterans Rally in DC as VA Cuts Approach

Press Release: Alabamians Rally on D-Day Anniversary to Defend Veterans’ Rights

Washington, D.C. — On the 81st anniversary of D-Day, a group of Alabamians joined thousands in a rally on the National Mall, protesting against cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) proposed by the Trump administration. Army veteran Zeb Lemon emphasized the need for unity among veterans, stating, “The stereotype of veterans is that they’re conservative…but everybody’s on board with love and freedom for all.”

Melanie Kolowski, a participant from Huntsville, shared a deeply personal motivation for attending the protest. She recounted the tragic loss of her son’s father, a veteran who died by suicide, and expressed concern over potential VA cutbacks impacting veterans. “With all the VA cuts… it’s really concerning for those veterans that…spend that time serving,” Kolowski remarked.

The Trump administration’s suggested measures include the elimination of over 80,000 positions within the VA, which currently serves a quarter of the federal workforce. Kolowski voiced the emotional toll such cuts could have, stating, “It’s so disrespectful, and it hurts my heart.”

Organized under the banner of the "Unite for Veterans, Unite for America Rally," the event aimed to rally veterans and their supporters against significant cuts and firings within the federal government. Lemon and Kolowski are members of the Purple People Resistance Alabama, a grassroots organization committed to standing against perceived authoritarianism and advocating for constitutional rights.

“Now is the time to push back,” Lemon urged, noting the heightened concerns in today’s political climate. Similar protests took place nationwide, all honoring the sacrifices of veterans on this significant historical occasion. The event featured various veterans sharing their stories of service, highlighting the ongoing struggle for veterans’ rights and well-being.
