Alabama’s Roads Rank Second in the Nation as Debate Over Truck Weight Limits Continues

Alabama’s roadways have achieved significant improvement, ranking second-best nationwide for overall quality. This progress comes five years after the Rebuild Alabama Act was passed, leading to over $392 million in grants for infrastructure improvements in all 67 counties. However, challenges lie ahead with proposed legislation that could increase the weight limits for log trucks on state highways, potentially compromising road quality and safety.
ALDOT has proactively undertaken numerous projects to enhance the state’s transportation network, such as the US-411 alignment in Cherokee County, the widening of US-82 in Prattville, and the installation of two roundabouts in Pike Road. The agency has also focused on pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure, including the ongoing restoration of the Tennessee River Bridge on I-65.
Bridge safety has seen significant improvement statewide, with the number of structurally deficient bridges decreasing from 213 in 2007 to just 60 by 2024. Major projects like the I-10 Mobile River Bridge and Bayway in Mobile County, funded by a $550 million federal grant, have further advanced the state’s infrastructure.
Despite these achievements, the potential changes in weight limits for log trucks pose a threat to road quality and safety. ALDOT continues its commitment to enhancing Alabama’s infrastructure, ensuring safer and more efficient travel statewide. The agency’s efforts, coupled with ongoing projects, demonstrate a dedication to maintaining high-quality roadways for the benefit of all residents and travelers in the state.
