Alabama’s House Delegation Approves Budget Blueprint to Kickstart Tax Cuts and Spending Cuts
The House delegation from Alabama split along party lines in adopting a budget blueprint aimed at cutting taxes, slashing spending, and increasing funds for the military to enact President Donald Trump’s agenda. After facing resistance from hardline conservatives, including U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, the GOP was able to secure enough votes to pass the budget resolution.
Moore initially had concerns about the lack of spending cuts in the plan but ultimately ended up supporting it after receiving assurances that the Senate would work towards significant cuts. The vote was 216-214, with all of Alabama’s Republican lawmakers voting in favor of the budget framework.
While Republicans believe that the budget resolution is an opportunity to enact Trump’s America First agenda, House Democrats argue that programs like Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program will face cuts. Congressman Shomari Figures and Terri Sewell are opposed to these potential cuts, believing that they will harm those who need help the most.
The budget blueprint also includes extending Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and additional tax cuts totaling $1.5 trillion. Raising the debt limit is also part of the plan, although the House and Senate have different proposals that will need to be reconciled.
With the House and Senate now in agreement on the budget framework, committees will begin the process of finalizing the details of the tax and spending cuts. Alabama lawmakers like Reps. Robert Aderholt and Dale Strong believe that passing the resolution is necessary to advance Trump’s domestic agenda.
