Alabama Schools Show Promising Academic Gains: Improved Reading, Graduation Rates, and Career Readiness
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama’s public school system has reported positive strides in academic performance across several key indicators, according to recent data presented by the state’s Department of Education.
The statistics, unveiled during a work session with the state school board, highlight significant advancements in third-grade reading proficiency, high school graduation rates, and college and career readiness (CCR) metrics.
In third-grade reading, 88.4% of students met the benchmark score on the state’s spring reading test, indicating improved literacy levels. This marks the first year students deemed insufficient readers risked retention due to the Alabama Literacy Act, passed in 2019. Despite slightly lower overall rates compared to last year’s 91.6%, State Superintendent Eric Mackey emphasized that adjustments in the passing score may obscure genuine progress. He reported that when recalibrated against previous years, reading success rates show year-over-year improvement.
The results varied across districts, with Lanett City and Sumter County notably lagging at 66%, while Orange Beach and Satsuma City boasted 100% success. Board member Tracie West raised concerns over persistent gaps, urging deeper discussions on school leadership improvements.
In graduation rates, Alabama’s class of 2024 achieved a remarkable 91% graduation rate, tying the state’s highest rate from 2019. Despite a dip during the pandemic years, this increase reflects hundreds more students receiving diplomas. Furthermore, 87% of students met at least one CCR indicator, narrowing the gap between graduation and readiness metrics to just 4%.
New requirements will mandate CCR indicators for graduation from the class of 2026, reinforcing the focus on ensuring students are well-equipped for future educational and career pursuits.
