Memorial Day Safety Campaign Launched by Alabama Law Enforcement
As Memorial Day weekend kicks off, Alabamians gather to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. However, it’s also a critical time to emphasize safety on Alabama’s roads and waterways. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has initiated its “101 Days of Summer Safety” campaign aimed at protecting residents and visitors during this busy travel season.
Colonel Jonathan Archer, director of ALEA’s Department of Public Safety, stressed the importance of safety, stating, “Our goal is simple — we want everyone to enjoy their summer plans and return home safely.” The campaign will see State Troopers patrolling major roadways, as well as popular lakes, rivers, and beaches throughout Alabama.
With the influx of activity on the waterways, Captain Jeremy Burkett has heightened border patrols and reminded boaters to remain situationally aware. First-time boaters are encouraged to accompany experienced individuals familiar with the area. Burkett noted, “Be cautious, especially in low-light conditions, as situations can change quickly.”
ALEA is urging drivers and boaters to adhere to essential safety protocols:
For Drivers:
- Buckle Up Every Ride, Every Time
- Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over
- Obey speed limits and slow down in work zones
- Keep your eyes on the road
For Boaters:
- Always wear a life jacket
- Do not operate a boat under the influence of alcohol
- Check weather conditions before venturing out
- Inform someone about your boating plans and expected return
ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor remarked, “The best way we can pay tribute is by protecting one another on the roads and waterways.” As the summer season unfolds, awareness and adherence to safety measures remain crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
