Alabama state senator vows to filibuster over unfair treatment by House colleagues

The Alabama Legislature’s daily session ended abruptly on Tuesday after Senator Andrew Jones threatened to filibuster all House bills in retaliation for what he perceived as unfair treatment of Senate legislation. Senator Jones claimed that the House was not being fair with Senate bills and threatened to carry over or filibuster all House bills. The Senate responded by carrying over all House bills on its calendar, while the House retaliated by carrying over all Senate bills. House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter expressed his desire to work out the situation with Senate President Pro Tempore Garlan Gudger. Speaker Ledbetter stated that the House has passed 277 bills compared to the Senate’s 119, and that the Senate has sent 49 bills to the governor while the House has sent 37. This session is the 22nd day out of a total of 30 days, with the last day being May 20th. The Legislature can meet for up to 30 days in a 105-day calendar period. The situation highlights the tensions between the two chambers and the challenges of passing legislation in the Alabama Legislature.
