Alabama Softball Secures Spot in Regional Final with 4-3 Win Over Virginia Tech

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama Crimson Tide softball team clinched a thrilling 4-3 victory against Virginia Tech at Rhoads Stadium on Saturday, advancing to the NCAA Regional final on Sunday. With their weekend record now at 2-0, Alabama (39-21) stands just one win away from advancing to the Super Regionals, while Virginia Tech (42-12) faces the challenge of defeating Alabama twice to secure a spot.

The game opened with Virginia Tech scoring two quick runs in the first inning. Alabama responded with a heads-up play from Brooke Ellestad, who managed to score from second base on a dropped third strike. A pivotal moment came in the third when Kali Heivilin blasted a two-run home run, propelling Alabama to a 3-2 lead. The Tide extended their advantage with an RBI single from Audrey Vandagriff in the fourth inning, making it 4-2. However, the Hokies clawed back with a solo home run from Kylie Aldridge in the fifth, bringing the score to 4-3.

The final moments were tense, as Virginia Tech put the tying run on base in the seventh. However, Alabama’s defense held strong, including an intentional walk to power hitter Bre Peck. The game ended when the final Virginia Tech batter flew out to Vandagriff, sealing the win for the Crimson Tide.

Alabama’s head coach, Patrick Murphy, praised the quality of play, noting the competitiveness of the matchup. With this win, Alabama aims for its 21st all-time regional title and a chance at an impressive 19th Super Regional appearance under the current postseason format.

The Regional final will take place Sunday, May 17, at 1 p.m. CT against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
