Alabama schools have improved in new rankings, indicating room for continued progress.

Alabama continues to defy national trends by showing improvement in reading and math skills among fourth graders, according to recent data released by the National Assessment of Educational Progress. The state, previously known for lagging in academic performance, has managed to surpass pre-pandemic scores in both subjects, making it one of the few states to do so.

Alabama saw significant gains in fourth grade math, with an average score of 236 out of 500, marking a 6-point increase. The state also maintained a steady score of 213 in fourth grade reading. While eighth grade reading and math scores dipped slightly, overall progress has been made since 2019.

This improvement has been attributed to recent state reforms in reading and math, as well as increased support for students at all grade levels. The Alabama Numeracy Act, which was passed in 2022, raised the rigor of math programs and provided additional resources such as coaches and interventionists in schools.

Despite these positive developments, there are disparities in academic achievement among different student groups. Gaps between white, Black, and Hispanic students have continued to widen in Alabama since 2019. Additionally, students in suburbs and rural areas have seen greater gains compared to those in urban areas.

Experts emphasize the importance of investing in human capital, such as interventionists and specialized staff, to support students who require additional instruction. By prioritizing resources and support for struggling students, Alabama can continue to build on its progress in reading and math education.
