Tragic Loss of Eliud Kipsang, Alabama Track Star
Eliud Kipsang, the celebrated 2021 SEC Runner of the Year and renowned track athlete from the University of Alabama, passed away on June 10 at the age of 28. Kipsang, a native of Eldoret, Kenya, was instrumental in redefining collegiate athletics, having broken the men’s 1,500-meter record in 2022, which still holds as an Alabama benchmark and ranks among the top five all-time for collegiate runners.
Remarkably, Kipsang set three records for the Crimson Tide: the indoor mile, the indoor distance medley relay, and the outdoor 1,500-meter race. His accolades also include a gold medal in the 1,500 meters at the 2021 SEC outdoor championships and a first-place finish at the SEC cross country championships.
Kipsang’s tragic passing followed a cardiac arrest incident on June 6, after which he was admitted to a Washington hospital’s intensive care unit. He was widely mourned by the athletic community, with Alabama track coach Dan Waters expressing heartfelt condolences, stating, "We are heartbroken by the passing of Eliud Kipsang, one of the most gifted athletes ever to wear crimson and white… a beloved teammate and dear friend."
In addition to his championship titles, Kipsang was a multi-time All-America selection and held six other top-10 finishes in Alabama track-and-field history. After a stellar collegiate career, he turned professional in 2023, aligning with Adidas.
His sudden departure has left a profound impact not only on his teammates and coaches but also on the broader running community, which recognizes the loss of a remarkable athlete and inspiring individual. Kipsang’s legacy will endure through his records and the lives he touched.
