BIRMINGHAM, AL — A tragic incident in Birmingham over the weekend resulted in the death of 57-year-old Jeffrey Scott Duffie, a contract worker for Alabama Power. Duffie, a resident of Daviston in Tallapoosa County, was killed when he was struck by a falling tree during his work in the area.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed the incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. on Saturday, on 21st Avenue South, also known locally as Diaper Row, in the Redmont Park neighborhood. Duffie was employed by Utility Line Construction Services, a company contracted by Alabama Power to carry out repairs on power lines damaged by severe storms that swept through the region Friday night.

Upon arrival, Birmingham Police and the Fire and Rescue Service found two victims, with Duffie tragically trapped beneath the downed tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:36 a.m. The second victim was promptly transported to the hospital; their condition and the extent of their injuries remain undisclosed.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates noted the heartbreaking nature of this loss and expressed condolences to Duffie’s family. The accident underscores the dangers faced by utility workers, especially during adverse weather conditions.
