Alabama Ranks Near the Bottom in Environmental Friendliness, Study Reveals
A recent study by the nonprofit tech charity Smilehub has ranked Alabama as the 47th state in terms of environmental friendliness, surpassing only Louisiana, Mississippi, and West Virginia. Eva Dillard, a staff attorney with Black Warrior Riverkeeper, emphasized that this low ranking is a result of deliberate choices rather than oversight. "We are typically near the bottom in general fund spending on environmental matters," she stated.
The study analyzed data from various sources, including the U.S. Census, U.S. Geological Survey, and the Environmental Protection Agency, focusing on indicators like energy efficiency, industrial pollution, and green transportation. Notably, Alabama’s standing in green transportation is hampered by legislation that prohibits the Alabama Department of Transportation from allocating funds for public transit—limiting its role to road construction.
Despite its poor ranking, Alabama boasts the highest level of freshwater biodiversity in the nation, underscoring the urgency of improved environmental measures. Dillard pointed out that prioritizing environmental protection is essential not only for ecological health but also for attracting businesses and economic investments. "Companies are reluctant to relocate to areas that disregard environmental wellness," she noted.
The consequences of environmental neglect extend beyond the economic sphere; they directly affect public health and the well-being of future generations. "It’s crucial to protect current residents from the perils of contaminated air and water," Dillard emphasized.
Encouragingly, Dillard advocates for citizen involvement as a catalyst for change. She urges Alabamians to voice their concerns and demand better environmental policies to enhance the state’s ecological standing. As Alabama faces the challenges of environmental protection, community engagement may prove pivotal for a greener future.
