Alabama State Employees’ Insurance Board Appoints Stephanie Azar as New CEO
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — In a significant move for state healthcare, the Alabama State Employees’ Insurance Board (SEIB) has unanimously elected Stephanie Azar as its new chief executive officer. Azar, who has served as commissioner of the Alabama Medicaid Agency since 2012, expressed her gratitude and commitment to SEIB’s mission. "I’m just going to give it my all," she stated prior to the vote held in Montgomery.
Azar’s appointment comes as a transition follows the retirement of long-serving CEO William Ashmore, who has led the agency for nearly 40 years. Governor Kay Ivey praised Azar’s extensive experience, noting her 26 years with the Medicaid Agency, and emphasized her capability to manage the pressing financial challenges facing SEIB.
The SEIB, which provides health insurance benefits to approximately 90,000 active and retired state employees and their dependents, has recently faced budget concerns, worsened by federal policy changes affecting prescription drug costs and Medicare payouts. Although lawmakers only approved a budget increase of just under 2.5% for the SEIB, Azar reassured members that her experience with tight Medicaid budgets has prepared her well for the role.
Current SEIB member Bob Childree has voiced concerns about the organization’s financial viability amid rising healthcare costs but also expressed confidence in Azar’s leadership. Experienced legislators consistently noted Azar’s ability to clarify complex Medicaid funding processes, a crucial skill in addressing SEIB’s financial landscape.
Legislators and board members alike are optimistic about Azar’s appointment as she steps into a role critical for supporting Alabama’s state employees and retirees. Her knowledge and proactive approach will be essential as SEIB navigates the complex dynamics of state healthcare funding.
