Alabama Lt. Governor Candidate Remains in Race Despite PhD Controversy

Nicole Wadsworth Stays in Alabama Lt. Governor Race Amid Controversy

Republican candidate Nicole Wadsworth is forging ahead in her campaign for Alabama’s lieutenant governor despite recent turmoil regarding her educational credentials and a staff exodus. The controversy began when Hunter Weathers, Wadsworth’s former campaign manager, sent an email to media outlets stating he had misrepresented her academic background. Initially, Weathers claimed that Wadsworth held a PhD from the University of Alabama, a declaration he now admits was false.

Wadsworth contends that she earned her PhD from North Central Theological Seminary, a non-regionally accredited religious institution. Weathers’ resignation, along with the entire campaign staff, was prompted by what he described as "persistent misinformation" that hindered their ability to operate in good faith.

In response to the fallout, Wadsworth has appointed Stewart Bragg as her new campaign manager. Bragg affirmed that Wadsworth’s educational qualifications are legitimate, stating that she holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, completed graduate coursework there, and earned two master’s degrees from the Florida Institute of Technology. He reiterated that her PhD was acquired through the necessary assessments and that any claims to the contrary are unfounded.

Despite the controversy, Wadsworth remains focused on her campaign, with Bragg emphasizing her commitment to represent "the hardworking people of Alabama." Other candidates in the Republican primary include Secretary of State Wes Allen, Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate, and Opelika pastor Dean Odle. The primary is scheduled for May 19, 2026.
