Alabama legislative leaders call for state agencies to be transparent and cooperate to improve government efficiency

Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledebetter and Senate Pro Tem Garlan Gudger are taking steps to improve government efficiency in the state. In a joint statement, they emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability to the people of Alabama. Ledbetter announced that the Alabama Commission on the Evaluation of Services (ACES) will hold public hearings in March or April to assess state agencies’ effectiveness and make recommendations for improvement.

Ledbetter and Gudger sent a memo to all state agencies demanding cooperation and information sharing with ACES. They stated that agencies that refuse to provide relevant information on government expenditures will be reported to legislative leadership. The lawmakers also asked each agency to appoint a contact person for ACES.

Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers in Alabama have been focusing on improving government efficiency. Alabama House Democrats introduced a package of bills, including the DOGE Act, to track and analyze government programs exceeding $50 million in costs. Governor Kay Ivey supported the efforts to streamline information exchange between ACES and state agencies.

The upcoming hearing on March 19 will feature a presentation by Marcus Morgan, the director of ACES, before the House Committee on Fiscal Responsibility. Ledbetter and Gudger highlighted the responsible budgeting and fiscal improvements that have been achieved since Republicans gained control of the House and Senate in 2010.

The efforts to improve government efficiency in Alabama reflect a commitment to serving taxpayers effectively and responsibly. The state government is working together to ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent wisely and that Alabama’s fiscal outlook continues to improve.
