Alabama Legislature Wraps Up 2025 Session Amid Contentious Bills
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – The Alabama Legislature concluded its 2025 session late last night, with lawmakers working tirelessly until midnight. A notable highlight was the passage of the controversial “Back the Blue” bill, which aims to expand legal immunity for police officers using excessive force while on duty. Sponsored by Rep. Rex Reynolds (R-Huntsville), supporters claim it is crucial for officer safety and will aid in recruitment and retention, as it reassures law enforcement personnel of the state’s backing.
However, the legislation has faced significant criticism. Sen. Rodger Smitherman (D-Birmingham) argued that it effectively gives police a "green light" for violence, particularly against Black individuals. On the Senate floor, Smitherman expressed concern for community safety while acknowledging the need to protect officers, stating, “We have to figure out how to deal with that to try to save our people.”
Despite the criticism, Reynolds countered that the bill was designed to restore confidence among officers while emphasizing the importance of supporting fallen officers’ families. The “Back the Blue” bill was part of Governor Kay Ivey’s public safety agenda, which she deemed a top priority this session. One proposed bill in this agenda, aimed at providing scholarships for police families, did not pass by the final adjournment.
In addition to the police immunity bill, lawmakers approved several other measures, including a bill raising the age of consent for medical treatment from 14 to 16 and "Parker’s Law," which allows nursing mothers to be excused from jury duty. Both bills now head to the governor for final approval.
