Alabama Is the Only State Where There Are No Mothers of School-Age Children in the Legislature, Reports Alabama Reflector

A recent report by the New York-based Vote Mama Foundation revealed that Alabama is the only state where the Legislature does not have any mothers of school-age children. The report showed that as of February, only 7.9% of lawmakers across the country were mothers of minors. However, despite this low representation, there has been a nearly 50% increase in the number of moms of minors in legislatures since 2022.

Sarah Hague, the foundation’s chief program officer, emphasized the importance of caregiver representation in decision-making bodies, stating that lived experience often guides policymaking. She also noted the need for more diverse voices, including mothers, to accurately meet the needs of American families.

Despite efforts to increase representation, Alabama still lacks mothers of school-age children in its Legislature. Senator Merika Coleman encouraged women with young children to run for office, emphasizing the importance of their voices being heard. Currently, there are 26 women serving in Alabama’s Legislature.

Hague highlighted the challenges facing parents in the US, including high childcare costs and lack of paid leave. The report suggested several measures to increase representation of moms, such as reimbursements for childcare, access to paid leave, and remote voting options.

Overall, the report underscores the need for more diverse representation in legislatures to address the needs of American families effectively. Hague stressed the importance of modernizing the political system to ensure that government policies reflect the realities of raising children in today’s society.
