Alabama Appellate Judge Bill Lewis Appointed to Supreme Court as First Black Republican Justice
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — In a significant milestone for Alabama’s judiciary, Governor Kay Ivey appointed Appellate Judge Bill Lewis to the Alabama Supreme Court on May 20. Lewis becomes the fourth Black justice to serve on the state’s highest court and the first Black Republican in this role, succeeding Justice Jay Mitchell, who resigned on May 19 to pursue a more active role in politics.
Lewis, who previously held a position on the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals, brings decades of experience to the Supreme Court. Ivey praised Lewis for his commitment to justice and fairness, stating, “His decades of experience will serve the Supreme Court of Alabama well, and I am confident he is the best choice.”
The appointment comes at a time when Alabama’s judicial landscape has been predominantly influenced by Republican officials, with the Supreme Court being entirely composed of Republican justices for over a decade. The last three Black justices, Oscar Adams, Ralph Cook, and John England, were all Democrats, highlighting a historical shift with Lewis’s appointment.
Concerns about representation have surfaced in Alabama, particularly following a 2016 federal lawsuit by a group of Black voters aimed at challenging the state’s method of selecting judges, arguing that statewide elections have led to all-white courts in a state with a significant Black population.
Mitchell’s resignation has opened up a vacancy on the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals, which Ivey will now fill. He is known for a controversial ruling regarding frozen embryos that created uncertainty around civil liability for IVF clinics in the state.
As Lewis steps into his new role, his appointment is viewed as a pivotal moment for diversity in Alabama’s judiciary.
